Session Overview

Despite being fundamental pillars of sustainable economic development through food sovereignty and job creation, agriculture and livestock continue to suffer from a chronic lack of private and public investment.

Indeed, constraints of all kinds (regulatory and legal, financial, fiscal, etc.) are observed, which hinder the development and transformation of agriculture and food systems.

This session aims to concretely identify the main barriers to investment in these agro-silvo-pastoral sectors and to discuss pragmatic solutions to address them.

The speakers — drawn from the public, private, financial sectors, and farmers’ organizations — will exchange views on the following issues:

  • Access to land

  • Financing

  • Quality inputs

  • Infrastructure (transport, storage, irrigation)

  • Markets

  • Regulatory framework

Particular emphasis could be placed on the role of public policies, public-private partnerships (PPPs), technological innovation, and innovative financing mechanisms (such as credit guarantees or agricultural insurance).

This session demonstrates how rural youth can improve their socioeconomic conditions through well-designed programs that have a long-term impact on the lives of young boys and girls living in rural areas of Senegal.

By sharing the experiences of beneficiaries of AGRIJEUNES and other successful programs, the session emphasizes the importance of involving communities, investing in training, and providing start-up capital so that young people can launch activities that generate monthly income. The session will also highlight the impact of such initiatives on the well-being of communities, including keeping young people in rural communities (combating rural exodus), thanks to the new employment opportunities offered.

Young people will be the main speakers at this interactive session. Videos of the project will be shown during the event. The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions. The session will be moderated by an IFAD representative or an IFAD partner.

Local and traditional species are at the heart of African countries' sovereignty: seed, food, and nutritional sovereignty. The collapse of biodiversity makes access to these forms of sovereignty even more difficult, because it mainly affects local species that are deeply rooted in dietary, social, and cultural habits and traditions. Horticultural species, fruits, vegetables, spices, aromatic and medicinal plants are among the most useful and most affected. Beyond genetic heritage, it is intangible heritage, knowledge, and know-how that are disappearing: the knowledge, experience, cultivation, association, conservation, and preparation practices that promote soil and climate adaptation and socio-economic roles. The round table provides an opportunity for various stakeholders in research, development, and higher education to illustrate the benefits for younger generations of good material and intangible management of these traditional species.

Co-organized by IPAR, IFPRI, and IDRC, this side event explores how school meal programs can serve as powerful levers for building resilient and inclusive agrifood systems in Africa. By creating demand for indigenous, climate-resilient crops and promoting regenerative agriculture, school meals offer a unique opportunity to improve both nutrition and environmental outcomes. The session will showcase evidence and case studies from multiple African countries, demonstrating how school feeding initiatives are being used to advance gender equality, youth empowerment, and local procurement at national scale. It will also provide a platform for dialogue among stakeholders from research, policy, civil society, and the private sector to identify concrete pathways for scaling up sustainable school meals across the continent. Ultimately, the event aims to foster collective action and policy innovation to transform food systems from the ground up—starting with schools.

Jeunesse, innovation et approche One Health : l'expérience des SOHIC pour transformer durablement les systèmes alimentaires en Afrique

Organizer: Students One Health Innovations Club (SOHIC)

This event, scheduled to take place in the Senegal Pavilion, aims to strengthen advocacy for the mobilization of domestic resources, in line with Strategic Objective 2 of the Malabo Declaration of the CAADP 2026-2035: “Stimulate investment and financing to accelerate the transformation of agri-food systems.” It will highlight three multisectoral projects focused on food safety, which offer decent employment opportunities for women and young people, but are also attractive to investors. These projects illustrate the impact of funding gaps in the dairy sector and inadequate production, storage, processing, and marketing practices. The proposed multisectoral and integrated solutions require greater commitment from the national private sector. The aim is to initiate a strong partnership to support the government in mobilizing local resources to achieve the food sovereignty ambitions set out in Senegal 2050.
