Young people are central to the future of Africa’s food systems—not just as farmers and entrepreneurs, but also as consumers and changemakers.
This masterclass will share experiences from youth-led initiatives that are transforming diets of the youths and their food environments across Africa, supported by the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, and partners. Through participatory approaches such as video-making process and use of youth animators for behavior change communication, young people have mapped the food available within their environment (schools, markets, and communities); analyzed how choices are shaped by price, advertising, and convenience; and propose practical solutions to make healthy, diverse, and sustainable foods more accessible. Further, youth animators have used different approaches to disseminate nutrition information and influence behavior change among their peers and within households.
Participants will learn practical tools and approaches for engaging youth in assessing food environments, social behavior change communication, influencing diets as well as planning improvements—from introducing nutritious local foods to designing campaigns that shift consumer behaviors. The session will showcase real stories of youth in action, highlighting youths as game changers in their own food environment and showing how evidence can be turned into practical solutions that improve diets, create opportunities, and build healthier food systems for all.

This session will spotlight the central role of soil health and the need to provide appropriate incentives through public policy and support programs in advancing Africa’s food systems transformation. Framed within the CAADP Kampala Strategy and Action Plan, the event will explore how enhanced soil health information systems can support African Union Members in integrating soil health into national planning processes.
Robust soil data systems are essential for designing and implementing effective public support programs that deliver inclusive and sustainable outcomes. Central to this is the repurposing of fertilizer subsidies to increase long-term agricultural productivity and improve soil health in the fiscally constrained environment. This includes better targeting, providing soil specific recommendations, and providing incentives for adoption of site-specific integrated soil management practices.
This session will highlight global issues around soil health, with a focus on regional (continental) processes with specific country examples. Stakeholders leading soil policy reform at each of these levels will share their experiences. The session will facilitate dialogue on aligning national and continental frameworks, strengthening institutional and technical capacities, enhancing soil information systems, and enabling the uptake of incentive mechanisms that promote sustainable and equitable food systems.

Governments are increasingly prioritizing climate-smart and climate-resilient agriculture by integrating it into Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and National Agriculture Investment Plans (NAIPs). However, translating these commitments into bankable investments and business cases that attract public and private finance requires strategic planning, innovative financial instruments, and coordinated action among key stakeholders. Programs such as the Food System Resilience Program (FSRP) and the CGIAR Food Systems Accelerator (CFSA) have demonstrated the potential of private sector engagement and financial innovation in driving transformation, yet more needs to be done to scale these efforts.
This Master Class aims to bridge the gap between policy commitments, investment planning, and implementation by leveraging practical tools and methodologies such as Climate-Smart Agriculture Investment Plans (CSAIPs). It will equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to identify investment opportunities, align them with climate finance mechanisms, and facilitate multi-stakeholder collaboration to drive food system resilience.

The agriculture sector consumes 30% of global energy, yet in sub-Saharan Africa, many farmers lack reliable electricity, limiting productivity and resilience. Decentralized Renewable Energy (DRE), such as off-grid solar, can meet up to 80% of off-grid agricultural needs but is often overlooked in favor of large-scale grid projects. DRE can power irrigation, refrigeration, and processing, supporting nutrition and smallholder livelihoods. Integrated energy planning that aligns centralized and decentralized solutions with agricultural needs is essential. This session introduces off-grid solar in agriculture, showcasing real-world cases and exploring how DRE can improve food systems, incomes, and nutrition in rural communities.

Coffee is the most widely traded tropical product, with up to 25 million farming households globally accounting for 80 percent of world output. Production is concentrated in developing countries, where coffee accounts for a sizeable share of export earnings and provides a key source of livelihood for households. However, there is still much to be done to ensure that the benefits of the coffee sector contribute to reducing poverty among these small producers and other actors in the chain, and that labour conditions are adequately met.
This high-level event at the Africa Food Systems Forum 2025 will focus on the regional dimension and will align with the Summit’s theme by spotlighting youth-led innovation, collaborative financing, and implementation strategies to transform Africa’s coffee sector.

More than half the population on the African continent suffers from inadequate micronutrient intake. The climate crisis, overreliance on a narrow set of staples, and soil degradation exacerbate the problem, leading to crop failures, yield declines, and reduced nutrient density in crops. In addition, over the past two decades, urban population growth and rising incomes in West Africa have increased demand for diverse, convenient, safe and nutritious foods, including processed products. At the same time, urbanization is changing foods environments —the physical, economic, and informational contexts that influence consumer food choices—with expected implications for nutrition.
Drawing on findings from the OECD/SWAC report “Diet Transformations and Changing Food Environments in the Sahel and West Africa”, this session will examine shifting consumption patterns, the expanding diversity and complexity of food outlets, and their implications for nutrition, affordability, and policy. It will highlight how these trends vary across countries and income groups and underscore the need for stronger data systems to better understand and guide future food system changes.
The session will also draw on findings from the study report “A Growing Opportunity for Nutrition” by Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and nutritionists Kendra Byrd and Caroline Joyce, this session will demonstrate how scaling up the production and consumption of 20 nutrient-dense and climate-smart opportunity crops can help to close micronutrient intake gaps in countries with a high burden of hunger and undernutrition. The session will examine priority micronutrient gaps in countries with high hunger levels, how scaling opportunity crops can affect micronutrient availability and food system resilience, and what leverage points exist for scaling opportunity crops for improved nutrition.
